When I Visited Darwin NT

I visited Darwin in the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. This time of the year is considered the best time to visit due to the comfortable climate, fewer rains, and lower humidity, making outdoor explorations more enjoyable.

What to Do in Darwin: Things I Did

Darwin is a place where you can treat your taste buds and indulge in your sense of fun.

From the sparkling harbour and WWII history to the city's Asian-influenced food and tropical outdoor lifestyle, Darwin is an adventurer's paradise.

Based on what I did, here are some ideas of what to do in Darwin:

  • Savour the flavours at superb places to dine out at. The proximity to Asia and an ocean of fresh catches combine to make Darwin a modern dining delight.
  • Go sailing or cruising from the picturesque Darwin Harbour.
  • Fish around Darwin, it's an anglers paradise!
  • Visit the unique Mindil Beach Sunset Markets from April to October, with over 200 specialty stores and food vendors.
  • Discover the Darwin Waterfront with its lush parklands, man-made beach and recreation lagoon.
  • See the world's largest display of Australian reptiles at Crocosaurus Cove and dive with the crocs in the famous Cage of Death.
  •  Darwin is famous for its stunning sunsets. You can enjoy this at various places, including Mindil Beach, Cullen Bay, and East Point Reserve
  • Spend a day experiencing the natural beauty of Litchfield National Park. You can go bushwalking, swimming under cascading waterfalls, and marvel at the massive termite mounds.
  • Wander through monsoon forests, coastal foredunes, mangroves, and woodlands at George Brown Botanic Gardens. This could also be an opportunity to spot native birds.
  • Check out galleries like Mason Gallery, Mbantua Gallery, Aboriginal Fine Arts Gallery, and more. There's also some eye-catching street art to be found in the city

In the City

Darwin offers a mix of modern and historical attractions. A visit to the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory is a must, for example.

Wondering what to do in Darwin to immerse yourself in the culture? The city offers many opportunities to learn about the history and traditions of the region. The Museum and Art Gallery of Northern Territory provides valuable insights into the city's history, including the impact of Cyclone Tracy. For a cultural excursion, consider a day trip to the Top End's natural attractions, such as the iconic Kakadu National Park.

The waterfront in Darwin is a haven for both adults and kids. The Wave Lagoon features a huge pool where visitors can ride the artificial swell on boogie boards and tubes, and there are also shallow water play areas for toddlers. For a day of adventure, consider a trip to the Territory Wildlife Park.

For Kids

There are plenty of family-friendly things to do Darwin-wide. The Territory Wildlife Park is a hit, offering an action-packed family day. Another popular spot is Berry Springs Nature Park, where kids can enjoy a swim in the springs and a picnic on the lawns. The Wave Lagoon also offers a chance for kids to splash around and ride boogie boards and tubes.
