Its history tells the story that it was named after the assistant paymaster in on the ship ‘The Salamander’, William Henry Henning. Henning who stepped ashore in 1866 to practice shooting, was unaware that this little island was in fact inhabited by a hermit. The story goes that the inhibitor disliked visitors and as a result Henning was promptly shot dead, hence its name. More recent findings have found, glimpses of the rare, yet large beach-stone curlew frequenting the shore.
